Indian River County Jail Overview

The Indian River County Jail is operated by the Indian River County Sheriff's Office Department of Corrections. It is the only place the county houses inmates, located in the unincorporated central part of the county west of the downtown Vero Beach courthouse. The jail holds the full local custody population, from the least serious misdemeanor up to the most serious felony under Florida law, and it houses both men and women across a wide range of ages. Arrests from the sheriff and from Vero Beach, Sebastian, and Fellsmere police all route here for booking.

This is a county jail, not a state prison. Most people inside are pretrial, meaning they are waiting on a first appearance, a bond decision, or a court date rather than serving a sentence. The county plan notes the facility was renovated in 2007, which raised inmate housing capacity to 612. The sheriff's corrections operation has held Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission accreditation since 2010.

Indian River County Jail Capacity and Population

The jail runs under capacity in the records reviewed. The county's emergency management plan lists a rated inmate housing capacity of 612 after the 2007 renovations. The sheriff's roster showed 446 current inmates on June 3, 2026, and the Florida Department of Corrections reported an average daily population of 489 for September 2025. Either figure leaves a clear margin below the rated capacity.

State reports also show the population is mostly pretrial, with 288 felony pretrial and 47 misdemeanor pretrial inmates counted in September 2025.

How to Look Up an Inmate at Indian River County Jail

Because this is a county jail, the correct tool is the sheriff's roster, not the state prison locator. The IRCSO inmate search is free and needs no login. A last name is enough to start, and a booking number narrows it to one event. A person sentenced to state prison will not be here, since that lookup moves to the Florida Department of Corrections.

Bond and Release at the Jail

Bond is one of the first questions families ask. The sheriff tells people to check the inmate search or profile first to see whether a bond has been set. If none has, the person waits for a judge to set bond at first appearance or, in some cases, the next court date. A bond can be paid in full at the jail or online, or posted through a registered bail bondsman, and the sheriff requires local and out-of-county bondsmen to register in Indian River County. For an online bond payment, the deposit portal must be set to "BOND" rather than canteen.

A posted bond does not always mean release. Other-agency holds, warrants, court orders, and immigration or out-of-county detainers can keep a person in custody even after the listed bond is met, and the public profile may not show every condition. Final release eligibility should be confirmed with the jail or the court.

Visiting Someone at Indian River County Jail

Visits run through Smart Communications, and every visitor must register, upload a photo ID and a selfie, and be approved before scheduling. On-site video visits happen only on Fridays in Visitation Building "K" at the jail address. Remote video visits from a home computer or phone are open in set windows through most of the day. Visits cannot be booked more than 72 hours ahead, run in 30-minute blocks, and are capped at two hours per week with one visit per day.

Mail, Phone, and Money at Indian River County Jail

Personal mail and tablet messaging run through Smart Communications, with general letters sent to the Department of Corrections post office box in Seminole, Florida and privileged legal mail sent to the physical jail address. Money is deposited through the TouchPay and GTL portal using the facility locator number 232960, the inmate's full name, and the commissary number from the roster. Deposits work online, by phone at (866) 232-1899, or in cash at the visitation-center kiosk, and a convenience fee applies.

Deposits first cover any booking fee and outstanding debt before the balance reaches the canteen account, and money orders or cashier checks are not accepted.

Booking and Intake at Indian River County Jail

Intake follows an arrest. A person is transported to the jail, where staff record identity and demographics, take a booking photo, and assign a booking number and case number. A commissary number is created for deposits and tablet services, property and funds are receipted, and medical and mental-health screening takes place. The sheriff says intake screening and care are provided free, regardless of ability to pay. Classification then assigns housing, and a person who has no bond set waits for first appearance, held every morning at 8:30 a.m. at the courthouse.

Medical, Property, and Inmate Funds

The jail handles medical, property, and money through set channels. Medical questions go to the inmate medical information line at (772) 978-6372, which is reviewed within 48 hours on weekdays, and health information requires an active Release of Information on file plus a valid ID shown in person. The sheriff says intake screening, chronic care, mental-health services, and emergencies are provided free, and no inmate is refused care for lack of funds.

Property is released only after the inmate fills out a release slip through Smart Communications naming who may pick it up. That person needs a photo ID, pickup runs weekdays from 8:00am to 4:30pm by appointment with the Property unit at (772) 978-6363, and items are discarded 30 days after release. Inmate funds are managed on the commissary account, where deposits first cover any intake fee and outstanding debt before money reaches the canteen.

About Indian River County Jail

The jail is known locally for an unusually broad set of programs. The sheriff runs in-jail GED testing as a certified test center, plus vocational tracks that include restricted barbering, forklift certification, lawn maintenance, CPR, and horticulture at the Sheriff Roy Raymond River Farms. A Medication Assisted Treatment partnership for opioid use disorder began in April 2023, and reentry navigators help with housing, identification, and employment before release.
